The hamlet of East Meadow is an unincorporated area located in the Town of Hempstead, in central Nassau County, New York. It has an area of 6.3 square miles. East Meadow is situated north of North Merrick and North Bellmore, south of Westbury, east of Uniondale, and west of Levittown and Hicksville. The main east/west traffic arteries serving the area include the Southern State Parkway, Hempstead Turnpike, Old Country Road and the Northern State Parkway. Major north/south roadways serving the area include the Meadowbrook Parkway, Wantagh State Parkway, Merrick Avenue, and Route 106. Public bus transportation is available along Hempstead Turnpike, Old Country Road, and Route 106. Rail transportation is not available within East Meadow, but can be accessed at a number of nearby stations of the Long Island Railroad - specifically, the Westbury station to the north or the Merrick or Bellmore station to the south. East Meadow is predominantly a residential community with retail and other commercial development interspersed along the main roadways. Numerous hospitals, schools, and houses of worship are present throughout the area. Also in the immediate area are Eisenhower Park and Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Historical origins: Not too surprisingly, the land occupying East Meadow was initially utilized as a grazing plain for cows to feed on in the late 17th century. Later on, in the 1700's, the meadow served mainly sheep - which were, at the time, the source for nearly 60 percent of the wool manufactured within the United States.
